⁦.iq⁩ domains, explained

Iraq's own domain is the strongest address an Iraqi business can have — and the most misunderstood. Documents, timelines, and how registration actually works.

Every country has its own corner of the internet. Iraq's is .iq — and for an Iraqi business it's the strongest address available: your-company.iq says where you are and who you serve before the visitor reads a word. It's also the domain people know least about, because registering one doesn't work like registering a .com.

Why .iq is different

A .com registration is instant and anonymous — type a name, pay, done. The .iq registry works the way official things in Iraq work: applications are reviewed by a person, with documents. That's not a defect; it's the reason a .iq address carries weight. Nobody typo-squats a domain that requires paperwork.

Practically, it means three things:

  • Documents. The application is supported by identification — for a company name, company registration papers; the exact set depends on the name being claimed.
  • Time. Registration is manual, so it takes days, not seconds — typically 1–3 working days once the application is complete.
  • Eligibility. The registry expects a real connection between the applicant and the name. Your own company name is straightforward; a random dictionary word is not.

.iq or .com.iq?

Both exist, and they signal slightly different things. your-company.iq is the short, national flagship address. your-company.com.iq marks a commercial entity specifically, the way .com.uk-style second levels do elsewhere — some businesses register it alongside the bare .iq to hold both. If you're choosing one, choose the shorter one; if the name matters to you commercially, hold both and point them at the same site.

What we do with the paperwork

This is the unglamorous part of our domain service, and the part clients actually thank us for: we prepare and submit the application, tell you exactly which documents are needed for your case, follow it through the manual review, and configure the domain on our own nameservers the moment it's granted — DNS management included, in the same portal as your hosting and email.

International domains — .com, .net, .org and the rest — we register too, instantly, from the same account. The current price table for every TLD we offer, .iq included, is on the domains page; .iq prices are exact, not estimates.

Three questions we hear weekly

"Can a foreign company register .iq?" The registry's review looks for a genuine connection to the name and to Iraq — a registered local presence makes it straightforward. Ask us before assuming either way; we'll tell you honestly what your case needs.

"I registered my company name as .com years ago — why add .iq?" Because your Iraqi customers type it, your Iraqi competitors can otherwise claim it, and the paperwork barrier means recovering a name someone else holds is far harder than registering it first.

"Does .iq work like a normal domain once it's mine?" Completely. Websites, email, subdomains — DNS is DNS. The only special part is the registration; after that it's an ordinary domain with an extraordinary amount of local credibility.
